In Vietnam in recent years, there have been many investments to the telephone network. Where there has been investment, modern technology is now used accordingly and it is a reliable and comfortable network. Where there has not already been investment, the telecommunications network is far behind.

In mid-2004, 4.9 million fixed lines, 3.4 million mobile phones and 5.1 million Internet users were numbered. Most users visit an Internet cafe, of which there are a large number throughout the country. Like in China, the government is concerned that the Internet is being undermined by the state monopoly of information and ultimately the legitimacy of one of the Communist Party could be called into question.

It is therefore important for the whole country that a gateway (Vietnam Data Communications) with a filter system is used, which is to block unwanted content. This included several times in the past, the BBC website. The Vietnamese post is considered slow and unreliable.
